SO YOU WANT TO COMPETE?

Competitions are back with yet again some special prizes for our winners. We debated a long while on whether the crossover competition would make it back, but in 2026, we want to make it all about our new up and coming shining stars. More to be announced soon but in the meantime, we’re back with the following contests:

  1. The Open Mix&Match

  2. The Open Classic

  3. Rising Star Mix&Match (NEW!)

  4. Impromptu fast feet competition (no registration needed)

All levels welcome to enter. Competitions descriptions below so you can decide which one you’d like tp participate in.

2026 competitions

  • Open Mix&Match

    Open to dancers of any skills level - enter as a lead, follow, or enter for both roles! The sky is the limit!

    How it works: Leads and Follows sign up individually and are randomly matched to a partner for each round of this competition.

    Prelims: couples will dance in heats to a minimum of three songs of three different tempos (medium, fast, faster or ~ 180bpm, 200bpm, 230bpm).

    Final: finalists will dance a warm-up all-skate dance and will have one spotlight to DJ-ed music, then a final all-skate. Final tune will be approx. 230-250bpm.

  • Open Classic

    Open to couples of any skills level. A couple consists of one leader and one follower.

    How it works: designed to showcase the beauty of partner dancing and the intricacies of Balboa. Show off your skills, connection and energy.

    Prelims: couples will dance in heats to a minimum of three songs of three different tempos (medium, fast, faster)

    Final: finalists will dance a warm-up all-skate dance and will have one 1min30 long spotlight to live music, followed but a final all-skate - approx. 230bpm for final.

  • Rising Star/Up and coming star Mix&Match

    Rising Star Mix&Match

    We love new dancers, we want to celebrate you, and this year, you’ll get the chance to enter a mix&match competition made FOR YOU!

    You will be matched with an advanced dancer as a leader or follower, and compete in front of your peers. All for fun and to show us what the new generation of dancers brings to the part.

    How it works: this competition is really dear to our hearts. We need our new and long-term dancers to be celebrated, and this is why we’re dedicating a whole new competition to them.

    To qualify, you will need to tick (most of) those boxes: 1) you have been dancing less than 4 years OR have never made it into an advanced stream at workshop weekends; 2) you are registered in the Level 1 (intermediate) stream; and 3)  you have never made finals in ANY balboa competition.

    Prelims: Amateur dancers will be matched with each other. Couples will dance in heats to a minimum of three songs of three different tempos (medium, fast, faster)

    Final: finalists amateur dancers will be matched with an adnvanced dancer of the other role. You will dance a warm-up all-skate dance and will have one 1min30 long spotlight to live music, followed by a final all-skate - approx. 210bpmfor final.

  • Fast Feet Competition

    This competition could take place at ANY TIME during the weekend. Find yourself a partner, and showcase your pure balboa to fast, faster, faaaaster music.

    While not an "official" competition, we want to keep it fun and if you're up for a challenge, listen to the announcements throughout the weekend. Think of it as an underground unofficial type comp, where everything could happen.
